Race Report: Belk Bowl 5K (2013)

In my last post I mentioned how terrific winter weather in the South can be.  I take it back.

Belk is is sponsor of the Belk Bowl, a BCS football game between teams from the ACC and SEC.  This was the first 5K attached to the game later that day, and there was a lot of great excitement in uptown Charlotte.
Our running team + Batman
The North Carolina Tar Heels were playing the Cincinnati Bearcats at Bank of America Stadium this weekend, and the fans were out in color and style.  Terrific crowd coming in for the game, and the team support started early.  It was a little surprising to see all that Cincinnati red in a city so close to the Tar Heels - the Ohioans traveled well!
Getting ready to start
The race itself was a lot of fun.  An all-road race, lots of cold people at the start, and a fairly flat down-and-back course made for a nice pace.  As with many races, everyone was cordial on the course.

Batman + Homer the Dragon
Post race was just as fun as pre-race, with three mascots, cheerleaders, dancing, and a nice post-race celebration.  Being part of the larger event made the 5K special.
Running team post race.  Great to run with these lightning guys!
Great atmosphere, nice fast course, good company, and the excitement of the bowl game all made this one to remember - and one to repeat.
