Race Report: Edison Square 5K (2014)

The first ever Edison Square 5K kicked off this June in the Winding Walk neighborhood in Charlotte.  With over 100 participants in this neighborhood race, it was a strong turnout that raised over $4,000 in the fight against cystic fibrosis.

Marc Dy, known by many in the community as Doctor Dy, led the charge to put this event together and raise both awareness and money.  It was nice to see some familiar faces at this one, and think everyone had a good time.

Everyone lined up on the starting line, drawn with chalk across the road, and heard some words about the importance of fighting cystic fibrosis.  A family shared a bit about their personal struggles with CF, and how they are overcoming and beating the odds.  It was a nice, inspirational start to the run.

Weather was excellent, and we were off!  The run through the neighborhood was pleasant, and the front of the field was fast.  I remember cresting the first hill and already seeing the lead runners dipping behind the next one.  It was a good pace for me, and I found my stride late, passing a pretty fast younger runner near the end.  At least that's what was happening until he noticed me.  He had been lagging a bit, and when he saw me he kicked back into his regular gear, going faster than I could and leaving me in the dust.

Left in the dust.
In the end, I was very happy with my time, enjoyed the neighborhood, and had some pleasant conversation with a few other runners along the way.

The Edison Square 5K had a new race feel, and a nice community feel as well.  It's no small effort to organize a race for the first time.  Kudos to Dr. Dy for putting on a very good first race and raising money for a good cause.
